EN ISO 4414, “Pneumatic fluid power – General rules and safety requirements for systems and their components (ISO 4414:2010)”, sets the design rules for safe compressed air systems on machines. Because air is compressible, pneumatic systems store energy: a cylinder can move after the supply is cut, and axes can change position suddenly when air returns. The standard deals with these hazards for the whole circuit, from the air preparation unit to the cylinder.

Which machines are covered?
The standard applies to pneumatic systems used on machinery and to their components; it covers design, construction, installation and commissioning. Typical examples:
- Packaging, filling and labelling machines
- Assembly automation and gripper systems
- Pneumatic presses and clamping devices
- Door and guard drives
- Transfer, sorting and pusher cylinders
- Valve terminals and air preparation units
It is a system standard and does not cover the compressor itself or air receivers. Compressors fall under their own machine standard and air receivers under the pressure vessel legislation. Hydraulic systems are covered by EN ISO 4413.
Main requirements of the standard
- Protection against overpressure: The maximum permitted pressure must not be exceeded in any part of the system; pressure regulators and relief valves are used where needed.
- Isolation and air dump: The system can be isolated from the air supply and the remaining air released; the shut-off valve is lockable.
- Trapped air: In some valve positions air stays in the cylinder; the design and the instructions show how it is released.
- Loss and return of pressure: A drop or return of pressure must not cause hazardous movement; a soft-start valve is used where needed.
- Load holding: Vertical cylinders and grippers must not drop the load when air is lost.
- Speed and force: Cylinder speeds are adjustable and end-of-stroke impacts are cushioned.
- Hoses and connections: Hoses suit the pressure and the environment; measures are taken where a whipping hose could injure.
- Exhaust and noise: Exhaust air is not directed at people and noise is reduced with silencers.
EN ISO 4414 verification tests
The system is verified by inspection and testing, usually on the machine at commissioning.
| Test or check | What is verified? |
|---|---|
| Inspection against diagram and parts list | The installed system matches the circuit diagram and components are correctly marked |
| Pressure and leakage test | The system works at maximum working pressure without damage and without noticeable leaks |
| Pressure settings | Regulator and relief valve settings match the design values |
| Functional test | All movements, sequences and safety functions work as designed |
| Loss and return of air | No hazardous movement occurs and loads are held when the supply is lost and restored |
| Isolation and dump | With the shut-off valve closed the system exhausts and no trapped air remains |
Test results are recorded and handed over with the system documents.
Its place in the CE marking process
- Risk assessment: Pneumatic hazards from pressure, stored energy, unexpected movement and noise are identified under EN ISO 12100.
- Design: The circuit diagram, component selection and protective measures are prepared to EN ISO 4414.
- Verification: Pressure, leakage and functional tests are carried out.
- Technical file: The pneumatic circuit diagram, parts list and test records go into the technical file.
- Declaration of conformity: EN ISO 4414 is listed among the standards applied.
Conformity with a harmonised standard gives presumption of conformity with the relevant essential requirements of the machinery legislation. Turkey applies the same rules through its own regulation aligned with 2006/42/EC. See also CE marking of machinery.

Frequently asked questions
Does shutting off the air make the machine safe?
Not on its own. Compressed air can remain in cylinders and lines. The supply is isolated, the system is exhausted and trapped air is released separately.
Why is a soft-start valve used?
If air is applied suddenly to an empty system, cylinders can move abruptly and without control. A soft-start valve raises the pressure gradually and prevents this.
