ISO/IEC 17065 Consultancy for Product Certification Bodies
October 1, 2026ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. The current edition is ISO/IEC 17025:2017. It sets requirements for both the technical competence of the laboratory and its management system, so that customers can rely on results that are accurate, repeatable and traceable. With CE Danışmanı (CE Consultant) you prepare for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation through a single point of contact for the whole process.
Who needs ISO/IEC 17025
- Testing laboratories that determine the physical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, thermal or other properties of products and materials
- Calibration laboratories that calibrate measuring instruments
The standard can be applied by all three kinds of laboratory:
- First-party laboratories: the manufacturer’s own laboratory
- Second-party laboratories: the customer’s laboratory
- Third-party laboratories: independent laboratories
What determines a laboratory’s technical competence
| Factor | What is expected |
|---|---|
| Personnel | Education, experience and expertise to perform the tests, use the equipment and interpret the results correctly |
| Equipment and facilities | Suitable, calibrated equipment and a laboratory environment that does not affect the results |
| Management system | Defined procedures and policies that reduce the risk of error, ensure traceability and support continual improvement |
| Methods | Test and measurement methods based on national or international standards, documented and validated |
| Calibration and maintenance | Regular calibration with metrological traceability, and planned maintenance of the equipment |
Why laboratories seek accreditation
- Confidence. Accreditation shows customers that results are produced to an internationally accepted standard.
- Demonstrated competence. It is evidence that tests or calibrations are accurate, repeatable and traceable.
- Market position. Customers prefer accredited laboratories, and many regulatory schemes accept only their reports.
- Improvement. The management system keeps the laboratory reviewing and improving its own work.
For manufacturers this is also why test reports from accredited laboratories carry more weight in a technical file and in conformity assessment.
How accreditation works
- Scope. The laboratory decides which tests or calibrations it wants accredited.
- Preparation. Existing practice is compared with the standard, the system is developed and gaps are closed. Internal audits are part of this stage.
- Application to the accreditation body with the management system documentation. In Turkey the national accreditation body is TÜRKAK.
- Assessment. The accreditation body reviews documents, interviews personnel and observes the laboratory at work.
- Closing nonconformities. The laboratory corrects the findings raised in the assessment.
- Accreditation certificate for the defined scope.
- Periodic assessments to keep the accreditation. If the laboratory no longer meets the requirements, the accreditation can be withdrawn.
