Energy Labelling Regulation (EU) 2017/1369
October 1, 2026
Cosmetic Products Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009
October 1, 2026The Gas Appliances Regulation (GAR), Regulation (EU) 2016/426, sets the essential requirements for appliances burning gaseous fuels and for their fittings, so that they can be placed on the market and put into service without endangering persons, domestic animals or property. It replaced Directive 2009/142/EC and has applied since 21 April 2018. Appliances and fittings in scope must carry the CE marking on the EU and the Turkish market.
For CE marking of gas appliances and fittings, apply to CE Danışmanı (CE Consultant); we manage the whole process for you.
What is covered
Appliances are those burning gaseous fuels used for cooking, refrigeration, air-conditioning, space heating, hot water production, lighting or washing, together with forced draught burners and the heating bodies fitted with them. Fittings are safety devices, controlling devices and regulating devices, and their sub-assemblies, designed to be incorporated into an appliance.
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Domestic cooking | Hobs, cookers, ovens |
| Professional kitchen equipment | Ranges, stockpot stoves, griddles and grills, bains-marie, convection ovens, bakery ovens, boiling pans, tilting pans, doner kebab grills |
| Heating and hot water | Condensing combination boilers, wall-hung and floor-standing gas boilers, instantaneous water heaters |
| Burners and heaters | Forced draught gas burners, gas-fired air heaters, independent gas-fired space heaters |
| Outdoor and leisure | Camping stoves, gas barbecues |
| Fittings | Pressure regulators, gas taps and valves with safety devices, control and regulating devices for heating and cooking appliances |
What is excluded
- Appliances specifically designed for use in industrial processes carried out on industrial premises
- Appliances specifically designed for use on aircraft and railways
- Appliances for research purposes for temporary use in laboratories
“Normally used”
The essential requirements must be met when the appliance is normally used. That is the case when it is:
- Correctly installed and regularly serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Used with a normal variation in gas quality and a normal fluctuation in supply pressure
- Used for its intended purpose or in a way that can be reasonably foreseen
Conformity assessment
A notified body is involved in every route. For series-produced appliances and fittings, the manufacturer combines EU-type examination (Module B, production type) with one of the following, at its choice:
| Module | Production phase |
|---|---|
| C2 | Conformity to type based on internal production control plus supervised product checks at random intervals |
| D | Conformity to type based on quality assurance of the production process |
| E | Conformity to type based on product quality assurance |
| F | Conformity to type based on product verification |
For an appliance or fitting produced as a single unit or in small quantities, the manufacturer may choose unit verification (Module G).
EU Declaration of Conformity
By drawing up the declaration the manufacturer takes responsibility for the conformity of the appliance or fitting. The declaration is kept up to date. For a fitting, it also states the characteristics of the fitting and gives instructions on how it should be incorporated into an appliance or assembled, so that the finished appliance can meet the essential requirements. A copy of the declaration accompanies the fitting.
CE marking and inscriptions
The CE marking is affixed visibly, legibly and indelibly to the appliance or fitting or to its data plate. Where that is not possible, it goes on the packaging and the accompanying documents. It is followed by the identification number of the notified body involved in the production control phase and the last two digits of the year in which the marking was affixed.
Duties of each operator
| Operator | Main duties |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Designs and manufactures to the essential requirements; draws up the technical documentation; has the conformity assessment carried out; issues the declaration and affixes the CE marking; keeps both for 10 years; marks type, batch or serial number and its own name and address; supplies instructions and safety information |
| Authorised representative | Acts under a written mandate; keeps the declaration and the technical documentation for 10 years and provides them to the authorities on request |
| Importer | Places only compliant products on the market; checks that the conformity assessment has been carried out, the CE marking is affixed and the instructions are supplied; indicates its own name and address; keeps a copy of the declaration for 10 years |
| Distributor | Verifies the CE marking and the presence of instructions and safety information before making the product available |
GAR in Turkey
Turkey applies the Regulation through its own Regulation on Appliances Burning Gaseous Fuels, published in the Official Gazette of 5 May 2018 and aligned with (EU) 2016/426. Instructions and safety information must be supplied in Turkish. Imported appliances are checked through TAREKS. Electrical parts of gas appliances are also assessed for electrical safety and EMC.
