Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU
October 1, 2026
Ecodesign: Directive 2009/125/EC and the ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781
October 1, 2026The Simple Pressure Vessels Directive (SPVD) 2014/29/EU sets the essential safety requirements for series-produced welded vessels that hold air or nitrogen under pressure, and the conditions for placing them on the market. Vessels in scope above a set threshold must carry the CE marking on the EU and the Turkish market.
For CE marking of simple pressure vessels, apply to CE Danışmanı (CE Consultant); we manage the whole process for you.
Which vessels are covered
A vessel is a simple pressure vessel under the Directive when all of the following apply:
- It is welded, intended to be subjected to an internal gauge pressure greater than 0.5 bar, intended to contain air or nitrogen, and not intended to be fired.
- The parts and assemblies that contribute to its strength under pressure are made of non-alloy quality steel, non-alloy aluminium or non-age-hardening aluminium alloys.
- It consists of a cylindrical part of circular cross-section closed by outwardly dished or flat ends on the same axis, or of two dished ends on the same axis.
- Its maximum working pressure does not exceed 30 bar and the product of that pressure and its capacity (PS x V) does not exceed 10 000 bar x L.
- Its minimum working temperature is not lower than -50 °C and its maximum working temperature is not higher than 300 °C for steel or 100 °C for aluminium and aluminium alloy vessels.
The typical product is the air receiver of a compressor. Vessels that do not meet these criteria, and other pressure equipment such as piping, boilers, valves and heat exchangers, fall under the Pressure Equipment Directive.
What is excluded
- Vessels specifically designed for nuclear use, failure of which may cause an emission of radioactivity
- Vessels specifically intended for installation in, or the propulsion of, ships and aircraft
- Fire extinguishers
The 50 bar x L threshold
| PS x V | Requirement | CE marking |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 bar x L | Designed and manufactured in accordance with sound engineering practice | No |
| More than 50 bar x L | Must meet the essential safety requirements on materials, design, manufacturing processes and putting into service | Yes |
Conformity assessment
For vessels above 50 bar x L, a notified body first carries out an EU-type examination (Module B). Production is then assessed according to PS x V:
| PS x V | Procedure after Module B |
|---|---|
| More than 3 000 bar x L | Module C1: conformity to type with supervised vessel testing |
| More than 200 and up to 3 000 bar x L | Module C1, or Module C2: conformity to type with supervised vessel checks at random intervals |
| More than 50 and up to 200 bar x L | Module C1, or Module C: conformity to type based on internal production control |
The technical documentation submitted to the notified body typically includes:
- A description of the vessel
- Design and manufacturing drawings, calculations and test reports
- The standards applied
- The risk analysis
- Instructions for use, installation and maintenance
The body examines the documents and may visit the production site.
Manufacturer’s duties
- Ensure the vessel is designed and manufactured to the essential safety requirements (above 50 bar x L) or to sound engineering practice (50 bar x L or less)
- Draw up the technical documentation and have the conformity assessment carried out
- Issue the EU Declaration of Conformity and affix the CE marking and the inscriptions
- Keep the technical documentation and the declaration for 10 years after the vessel is placed on the market
The authorised representative keeps the same documents for 10 years. The importer makes sure, before placing a vessel above 50 bar x L on the market, that the manufacturer has carried out the conformity assessment, and keeps a copy of the declaration for 10 years.
CE marking and inscriptions
The CE marking and the inscriptions are affixed visibly, legibly and indelibly to the vessel or its data plate before the vessel is placed on the market. The CE marking is followed by the identification number of the notified body involved in the production control phase. The inscriptions give the maximum working pressure, the maximum and minimum working temperatures, the capacity, the manufacturer’s name and address, and the type and serial or batch identification.
Electrical parts
Electrical control components fitted to the vessel or the assembly it belongs to, such as pressure switches, automatic valves and control panels, are assessed under the Low Voltage Directive, with their own test reports and entry in the declaration.
SPVD in Turkey
Turkey applies the Directive through its own Simple Pressure Vessels Regulation, published in the Official Gazette in 2016 and aligned with 2014/29/EU. Imported vessels are checked through TAREKS.
